Sisvel took over patent monetization for IRT from 1996 to 2017 in return for an agreed lump-sum fee, which was adjusted several times over the years. This included patents that Sisvel exploited in a patent pool for MPEG audio technology. Sisvel succeeded in enforcing licenses for this pool also against users of MP3 technology.
The Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court did not follow IRT’s reasoning and dismissed the appeal in full on November 9, 2022 (case no. 6 U 131/19). Revision on points of law was not admitted.
